THE TIMBERS OF LIBERIA

Liberia is located on the west coast of Africa and measures 38,000 square miles with 350 sq. miles of coastal belt, and a total population of 4.5 million people. The total forest land of Liberia is 4,329,000 hectares which constitutes 43.4% of the total land area and consists of 44.7% of the total rainforest of West Africa where 4.0% (175,000 hectares) is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest; 8,000 hectares of planted forest, and four National Forests covering 2223 sq. miles. Liberia’s forest is dominated by moist evergreen and semi-deciduous trees especially in the northern region of the country. According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment, FAD 2015, the deforestation rate at that time was 30,000 hectares per year. The conversion of forest land to agricultural use and the increase in mining for natural resources are the main drivers, along with uncontrolled logging contributing to the degradation.
Liberia hosts a vast array of timber species within the Upper Guinea Forest Belt (UGFB). About 240 tropical timber species have been identified some of whom are endemic to the country per the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Of the 240 species, 65 have been classified by the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia (FDA) as being commercially important for their various end uses of wood, such as, construction, flooring, furniture, decking, dowels, paneling, cabinets, fixtures, boxwood, carving, and many other uses.

Liberia Logging and Specialty Woods Company will provide timber logs from more than 38 species from the County regions of Liberia. These logs will include various species of mahogany, whitewood, redwood, walnut, teak, and others that can be adopted to many wood products. We will ship logs from the Port of Buchanan which is located about 67 km, or 47 miles from Monrovia.

Our harvesting processes and logging operations will adhere to the principles of the three C’s set forth by the reform acts of Liberia: Commercial, Conservation, and Community.

Commercially, we will harvest responsibly by protecting the developing trees in the felling area, and only cutting those trees with the minimum diameter requirements.

Conservation dictates that we follow sustainable forest practices and protect the fauna and flora is our working area. The company’s management and operational policies are geared towards sound environmental practices, and sustainability.

The Community expects Liberia Logging to assist in their uplift and to carry out its social corporate responsibilities of providing better living conditions, better health facilities, adequate schools, clean and safe drinking water, and safe roads and bridges. This conforms with our mission and our core values.

We live by our company motto: WE CUT, WE SELL, WE REPLANT.

Liberia Logging is committed to implementing reforestation in the areas in which we operate our business. We are dedicated to removing the carbon emitted by our vehicles by replanting trees in excess of those harvested so that the carbon footprint will be contained and the air will remain fresh and clean for years to come.
